The inspiration for these 3D printed porcelain sculptures come from my series Less Than a Second, part of the Grey Matter project. I’m exaggerating the meshing used to construct the digital renderings and this visible relief line work becomes decorative as well as structural. The 3D printed sculptures are then fired in a kiln. Sumi ink is a material I return to in my work and here I’m using it as a cold finish on the porcelain pieces. Sumi ink and porcelain have been used for thousands of years and I’m enjoying contrasting the newer language of the digital in their construction and decoration with these ancient materials.
